Podcast Interview on Video Gaming Addiction
A few weeks ago, my son, Jake and I were interviewed about Video Gaming Addiction by journalist, Brandie Weikle for her podcast series, The New Family. This morning that podcast was released, and even though I know the story intimately, I am still learning from my son. I listened again today, and felt so proud for his willingness to share. In this interview, Jake is raw, articulate, and relatable. I have an even better understanding of his journey, once again. And I think in his willingness...

Re: Subscribe to lottery tickets???
I was curious about this as well. I went on line to see what the registration process was like. It seems as though you have to deposit money in an account in order for the transactions to happen. I didn't see a link to add a credit card number or arrange direct deposit. If I am correct, then that might be a good way for people to manage their lottery buying habits as they will have to put the money up front for their purchases. It will also have people be more mindful of how much they are...

Assessing gaming disorder: Expert opinions
Gaming disorder can be difficult to assess, as there are concerns about over pathologizing normal or potentially healthy behaviours. A new study surveyed 29 international experts until consensus was reached about useful criteria for assessing gaming disorder. This study helps clinicians with creating their own assessments to ensure they're looking at the most relevant features in their assessment to target as well as ensure they're not problematizing less relevant features. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention for problem gambling manual
In Ontario, treatment for people with gambling problems was first implemented in 1995, in response to the opening of the province’s first commercial casino in Windsor. With extensive clinical experience and excellent research since then, knowledge about what constitutes effective treatment has been growing, but no one approach suits everyone. Treatment services have instead tended to adopt an eclectic and holistic approach, incorporating a biopsychosocial-spiritual model that draws on...

Serious games, mental health apps, and gambling disorder
The title of a recently published article, A Serious Game to Improve Emotion Regulation in Treatment-Seeking Individuals With Gambling Disorder: A Usability Study , peaked my interest for a few reasons. First, being part of a group of folks who design and create learning opportunities for mental health and addictions clinicians, we have talked about integrating "serious games" (broadly defined as games with educational or informational aims, vs. purely entertainment) into our course design.

Re: Funding for Interventions
Hi Olive I can't find the original document but it is called Ontario's problem - gambling Strategy and it has been in existence since 1996. Since 1999, it has been funded by a formula of 2 percent of gross slot machine revenue from charity casinos and slots at racetracks. The Strategy has a three-pronged approach consisting of treatment, prevention/awareness and research. I have attached a review of the strategy that was conducted in 2005. Gaming and gambling: What’s the difference?
Video games often have elements of gambling, and there are blurred lines between games of skill and games of chance. It’s important to understand the definition of gambling, how the lines are blurred and the signs of a potential problem. The YMCA Youth Gambling Awareness Program (YGAP) defines gambling as “risking something of value when you don’t know if you will win or lose.” “It’s a myth that you can only gamble with money,” says Dua Fatima, Youth Outreach Worker for YMCA in Toronto West.

Re: "Tech execs protect their kids from their own products."
So relatable Sharon. Yes those working directly in their field of expertise know the problems that arise and are more apt to do more prevention. I'm not surprised to hear tech experts, shield their children from devices. With any field of expertise this exists. Bankers, know too well about the scams, and can thwart many of these issues - especially for on-line issues. Doctors, probably so careful about germs/disease prevention and do things that common public doesn't. Tech and Security...

Interesting article. This idea of social media causing aggression is new to me. I'd be curious to hear more about this. I wonder whether solely reducing the amount of social media would reduce the potential for aggression or if there are other factors to consider. The other line in this article that rang true was: "Just because something makes you feel good doesn't mean it's good for you,"
