Behaviour change techniques used by family and friends of individuals with problem gambling

Registered Member ·
Friends and family of people with problem gambling may experience harms although they do not gamble (or do not gamble in harmful ways) themselves. Often times, they can play a role in helping the person gambling change their behaviour in ways that reduces the harms experienced by everyone. However, these behaviour change techniques (BCTs) are not widely understood. A team of researchers recently helped codify BCTs that family and friends used to both minimize harms for the families/friends...

Hi Olive I can't find the original document but it is called Ontario's problem - gambling Strategy and it has been in existence since 1996. Since 1999, it has been funded by a formula of 2 percent of gross slot machine revenue from charity casinos and slots at racetracks. The Strategy has a three-pronged approach consisting of treatment, prevention/awareness and research. I have attached a review of the strategy that was conducted in 2005. You can also find some information about it at the...

Re: Gacha Games - The merging of gambling and gaming

This podcast/YouTube series is great! One of the key quotes for me was: "I've never seen the appeal of casinos... they're scary but to me, Gacha is [like] paying for an experience, I want this thing I'm paying for... I know exactly what I'm getting into" But then... the price you're paying for an item is variable and the thrill of eventually getting it will elicit that dopamine hit. I appreciated the hosts arguing some of the nuances of Gacha vs casino gambling! I wonder how it would be...

Gacha Games - The merging of gambling and gaming

Below is a clip of some podcast hosts talking about "Gacha games" and the harms that might come out of it. Some NSFW language in the clip (a lot actually). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN_d-Np0pyg&ab_channel=TrashTasteHighlights How familiar are you with gacha games and what are your thoughts on this new area and how the general public sees it?

Great video Elaine. It wasn't a main part of the video you linked, but at 3:35 they're discussing a "whale" (i.e., someone who spends a lot of money on gacha games) and the subs indicate he, "did stocks and futures. That sort of thing". With gambling declining in Canada and in general worldwide, I wonder how many people who might have been gambling in slot machines or bingo might be gambling through gacha games instead, and how the profile of getting the same feeling of gambling through...

Great clip! Thanks for sharing Tara Marie and great to see Dr. Turner speaking on this panel. Curious to see the data on how popular regulated SESB becomes in Ontario as this rule comes into force... I know in the UK single events betting deals are highly advertised during major events such as football matches and horse racing.

New panel interview on single-event sports betting!

Registered Member ·
Soon, on August 27, the federal government will make it legal to gamble on individual sporting events . The provinces and territories will be able to set rules for new online and physical-venue forms of single-event sports betting (SESB). With Canadians spending approximately $10 billion per year on SESB through illegal networks, plus additional billions via opportunities in offshore jurisdictions, the new legal changes provide opportunity to regulate and control SESB, and divert money from...

Great clip - I agree that Dr. Turner had some balanced views. Definitely think we'll see some increased advertising! I'm interested in the points made that legalized SESB will likely divert money into legal streams that have the potential to: 1) help people come into contact with responsible gambling (RG) platforms and 2) a portion of that diverted money can be used to fund treatment and education. I'm also curious how likely the first point is, given these types of bets might not be made in...

That being said, we're running a similar opportunity in early October and will be posting information about it this week. So if you like I can let you know when this opportunity goes live
