Indigenous girls, two-spirit and trans women are the most vulnerable population for human sex trafficking, they access mainstream services the least, and present with the most complex trauma and life circumstances.
This webinar will focus on human trafficking of newcomers to Canada. It will discuss the needs, gaps and guidelines for intervention through the lens of the Support, Empower, Access (SEA) Project from the Association for New Canadians (ANC) in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Online Initiative to Address Human Trafficking invites you to join a free webinar focused on the pattern of historical exploitation through broken treaties and convoluted pieces of legislation that contribute to a false narrative of Indigenous peoples. This presentation will make connections to the patterns of human trafficking exploitation and discuss how current legislation and patterns continue to contribute to exploitation and vulnerability within the Indigenous population.
About the presenter:
Experts agree that not only has human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation become a major issue within Canada, but there have been few attempts to address this issue. Labeled one of the “fastest growing crimes in the province,” (Toronto Star, 2015), domestic sex trafficking has taken hold in Ontario recently and has become a hub for major trafficking routes (Gabrielle et al., 2014).

They will be able to ask our researcher/SME Talija Koncar questions and receive guidance. This is meant to be an educational tool to encourage participants to think critically of human trafficking and the world around us.
Today, on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, the government of Ontario introduced the Combatting Human Trafficking Act, new legislation and amendments to existing legislation that propose to better protect victims, support survivors and crack down on offenders.
