Brief Narrative Therapy brings a narrative philosophy and practice into time-sensitive counseling arenas such as walk-in therapy clinics and other forms of single session and brief services. It creates a collaborative, curious, and competency-focused way of working with people in brief settings. The aim is to make the most of every single session providing therapeutic conversations to people when they need it. It is based on the principle of “when all the time you have is now,” therefore promoting the facilitation of a meaningful, novel, and useful conversation immediately.

This workshop will explore two central maps of narrative therapy that are frequently employed in brief and single session therapy, and used in longer-term therapies. One of the most impactful, novel and useful conversations therapists might have with people are externalizing of the problem. We will explore these ways of thinking and talking about problems more deeply. Together we will practice developing questions to deconstruct problem stories.
The effects of “trauma” bring many people to therapy. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of experience, Jill will invite participants to explore an approach to deconstructing problematic life stories coloured by trauma, and authoring alternative, preferred stories. The work will be grounded in the narrative metaphor and involve the use of narrative practices. Participants will have the opportunity to witness the work through videotape examples and to try out practices through carefully constructed exercises.
The Canadian Public Health Association's annual conference, Public Health 2021, will be held virtually from October 6-8.
The preliminary program has been announced and is available on the conference website. Topics include several sessions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous sessions on stigma, and more!
