  • Dr. K provides some insight and a perspective shift for older generations around the concept of authentic online relationships and reinforces the concept that not all gaming is problematic.
  • Online gaming communities allow users to be judged on how they actually present themselves whereas in real life individuals are often judged by what they look like. This reinforces the anonymity of the online world which can often create a protective factor for people and therefore create more authentic connections.
  • He reiterates the message that there is an underlying need being met by online gaming and whether the gaming becomes problematic is dependent on whether the gamer has other ways of having these needs met.
  • Dr.K highlights the fact that unless we know what functions the online connections serve for the individual, they will not be able to gain control over the gaming use.
