The Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use Community of Interest brings together addiction and mental health service providers, researchers and subject matter experts in the fields of gambling, technology/Internet use and video gaming to collaborate and share knowledge on emerging trends and clinical best practices.

  • Cam talks about how playing video games overtook his life. He talks about dropping out of school and pretending to work at a restaurant. He explained he would pretend to go to the restaurant in the day so he could sneak back home to sleep after being up all night playing video games.
  • Cam talks about how his research said 97% of youth aged 2-17 play video games. In the UK he explained his research showed more kids between the ages of 2-5 know how to operate a smart phone application then know how to tie their shoes. Cam related playing video games to drinking in that some people can do it in moderation and some people can't.
  • Cam talked about looking at the signs of how you feel about gaming to see if it has crossed over into an issue. Some signs he talked about is if you're stuck at home playing video games and you want to stop and don't know how. He asks how that would make you feel? He suggested to explore if it makes you feel pain, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression or increased confidence.
  • Cam suggests if you feel you have crossed into addiction with video games to explore to reasons first. He explores 4 possible reasons: temporary escape; games are social/offer social control; games are a challenge; consistent measurable growth.
