This article, from 2021, documents the rise of social media use during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • in the wake of lock downs and social distancing, individuals were looking for ways to remain in connection with friends, family and community. There was an increase of 61% in general social media usage.
  • however, while social media can be a tool for connection, it also becomes a source of depression and anxiety for many, especially when chasing likes, comments, etc. It can actually remind people of their disconnection.
  • Social media also presents a lot of misinformation, stereotypes, false images of reality, etc, which can also be hard for individuals to navigate.

From a clinical perspective, understanding the impact of increased social media during this time will likely to continue to have an impact to this day.
