Unique in Canada and renowned for the diversity and scope of its programming, our events draw and connect professionals and community members from diverse perspectives, including health and social service providers, researchers, and policy makers. To mark Pride, Statistics Canada recently posted an article with information about LGBTQ2+ Canadians. It shares a number of interesting pieces of information including:

• as of 2018, LGBTQ2+ people made up 4% of Canada's population over 15, or 1 million people
• more youth and young adults identify as LGBTQ2+.

Recently, the BASIS reviewed a study looking at the association of youth suicidality and alcohol use based on sexual orientation.

Centering Two-Spirit and Indigenous experiences and ways is critical for more respectful, reciprocal, relevant, and responsible health research. Two-Spirit is often equated to an LGBTQ Indigenous participant, thereby rendering this community’s unique experience and history invisible and erasing important distinctions. This type of scholarship becomes a site of colonization.

This webinar is a learning opportunity to provide the tools and resources to better equip service providers in the human services and justice sectors when dealing with someone from the LGBTQ2S community. In this interactive workshop, you will take away:

• gained insight and knowledge of the LGBTQ2S culture
• understand some of the struggles of this sector of people
• have gained terminology and understanding of how to effectively communicate with LGBTQ2S folk without offending or un-intentionally hurting someone.

Creating a safe learning environment for support groups and educational workshops is an important job for peer specialists. In this presentation Ari Dennis introduces attendees to the concept of gender inclusion and how it applies to facilitation for peer specialists. Practical skills will be the core of the talk interwoven with personal narrative and statistics. The skills they will address are categorized broadly into personal inclusive practices, facilitation of groups with mixed gender or sexual orientation, and awareness and deconstruction of gender associations.

At a time of transformative advances in HIV prevention and treatment, today in Ontario, African, Caribbean & Black communities remain disproportionately impacted. A myriad of social, structural and economic factors are facilitating HIV transmission in communities of Same-Gender-Loving (SGL) men and limiting their access to safe and effective tools to promote health like testing, antiretroviral therapy and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

The Lancet Psychiatry, Mental Health Innovation Network, MHPSS.net and United for Global Mental Health have launched a series of weekly webinars designed to provide policy makers and the wider health community with the latest evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and how to address it.

Being in quarantine is already difficult and there are a number of additional issues that LGBTQI2S people may face. Egale, Canada’s leading organization for LGBTQI2S people and issues, has created a resource hub to help get LGBTQ2S+ persons through this difficult time.
