Alcohol, cannabis and nicotine are the three most commonly consumed psychoactive substances among young people in Canada. Substance use is a familiar term among teens and young adults, but many do not fully understand the possible risks of using these products. They may be nervous to start to talk about substance even with trusted adults.

Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to provide care to the millions of Canadians using cannabis. Whether using cannabis for medical purposes, recreationally, or both, pharmacists can help their patients navigate the many considerations around cannabis use, including safer use practices.

Pharmacists have expressed a lack of comfort with their cannabis-related knowledge, which is a barrier to care. To address this, the Cannabis Care Guide for Pharmacists has been developed to support pharmacists in the care of their patients.

Two researchers from the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine, Graciela Pineyro and Tomas Paus, have published their study this month which links Cannabis use to a thinning of the cerebral cortex in adolescents.
