Course Description

This guide is designed to help mental health and addictions organizations create safer and more inclusive spaces for trans staff, volunteers, service users, and community members people. It includes current terminology and pronouns, consideration of overlapping identities, and tips for the use of gender-inclusive language (language that doesn’t discriminate against a particular gender or gender identity).
 

Suicide disproportionally impacts 2SLGBTQI+ individuals. Often those who work directly with clients feel ill-prepared to cope with the complexities related to suicidal ideation, especially when intersectionality of experience plays into the interactions.

In this foundational webinar, learners will gain a framework for understanding 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and terminologies, the experiences of Queer people, and concrete ways to be allies in their personal and professional lives. This session combines personal stories, powerful statistics, and practical takeaways to leave learners with more confidence in their work supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

Recruiting and hiring peer researchers—individuals with direct experience of a phenomenon under investigation—is widely acknowledged as a best practice in community-based health research. However, there is a notable gap in the existing research literature when it comes to understanding the experiences of peer researchers themselves.

The experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ children and youth involved with Ontario’s child welfare system remain fairly invisible and there are limited clinical approaches designed to strengthen the skills of social workers and those providing care.

How do the questions we ask youth about their gender reflect assumptions that can perpetuate harm and reproduce transphobia?

The way we ask about gender matters. We all want to be acknowledged for who we are – to be respected, and to be referred to accurately and appropriately. In order to respect all youth, we must ensure that the way we ask about gender reflects the diversity of our lived realities. In doing so, we must interrogate and challenge how we understand gender and how we engage with gender in our youth work.
