This video shows the negative impacts of social media use. Friendships for teens are developed according to "streaks" on Snap Chat. It shows that friendships are becoming less meaningful and deep.

Her suggestions to decrease social media use to make build more meaningful relationships were good.  They take time to implement and make a habit.

Since I work with primarily youth I have observed the obsession with the snap chat streaks. They will have hurt feelings when they lose their streak with someone.  As well these streaks can go on for over 100 days and they sometimes use it to define how strong their friendship is.

I know a couple who got in trouble with their daughter.  She was unable to keep a streak going, and asked them to send the messages while she was indisposed.  They missed a day.  I didn't realize until this video what they even meant.

This seems like the most shallow way of relating.  These people need to set higher and more productive goals for themselves, and form deeper relationships that involve face-to-face interactions.  What a waste of time and energy.  It's just so impersonal.

I think it mimics a relationship breakup when a streak is lost. For some, streaks may indicate strength and commitment to a relationship and if the streak is lost for a variety of reasons, can be devastating for some youth. For others, letting go of maintaining streaks can be a major stress relief.
