A recent article published in the Journal of Addictive Diseases took an interesting approach to studying how people perceived gambling addiction during the Covid-19 pandemic. This strengths the idea that PTU involves looking at case by case and whether or not it is causing issues for people. Good point Brian, it is not helpful to demonize something that so many people do. We need to look at the pros and cons and why people do it, just like we do anything else, substance use, gambling, and so on. Brian, Your article had 212 comments so it must "have something to say"! The nine points are substantive, practical, and succinct. Video games need a new image where benefits and harms are balanced. When VG developers put their heads to it, maybe the helps and harms can be integrated into each game. Is it not somewhat like driving cars, ATVs, planes, or other forms of tech except that the concerns may be more on the mental side than the physical side.

I find this very sad. I remember being a teenager and comparing myself to other kids at school, how they dressed and looked, wanting clothes my family couldn't afford, or hearing about trips other family's went on. There was also TV and magazines, but as a teenager I cant imagine having images of unrealistic body types, other people's fancy clothing and trips and presents being splashed on a screen at me constantly, and having a constant feeling of wanting more or something different.

Wow! This is interesting. I totally agree that using a phone when with someone is like not being fully present. Many of us do this without thinking of the impact of a seemingly trivial action. We do this with other things too, like eating and scrolling, etc. We live in a distracted and multi-tasking world. No judgment but there are implications. I turned notifications off on a couple apps that I was using and I found it very helpful. In fact, I also deleted another social media app altogether and I dont feel the need to check it. I dont have a strong fear of missing out. I do notice though that these apps do their best to try and get you back, by maybe sending emails or other types of notifications to entice you to come back. I wonder about the methodology of the research that gave the results that they got.
