What is the cultural and historical context of cannabis use and how have they evolved through time in different parts of the world? In the first session of the two-part series « International perspectives on cannabis », we learned about the global history of cannabis use and its current regulation from experts from China, Colombia, Mexico, Europe, and North America.

The Cannabis Knowledge Exchange Hub will have a virtual presentation at next week's Innovations in the Science of Cannabis conference, hosted by the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research.

Based at Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, the Cannabis Knowledge Exchange Hub connects service providers and other stakeholders across multiple sectors with each other and with relevant, actionable evidence on cannabis use. Knowledge products developed by the Hub include fact sheets, evidence summaries, webinars, videos, practice-to-policy dialogues and more. This webinar, hosted by the US-based Drug Policy Alliance, will feature the Hub as an innovative model for cannabis knowledge dissemination.

The Ontario Cannabis Store has released their first-ever three-year social responsibility strategy!

The strategy's key pillars are:

3.      Knowledge: Advancing Cannabis Knowledge & Promoting Responsible Consumption

Statistics Canada has released the results of a survey on cannabis and alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among those who had previously consumed cannabis, more than one-third (34%) reported that their consumption had increased during the pandemic. Among those who reported increased consumption, 35% reported consuming cannabis on five or more days per week during the past month.

12% of those who used cannabis reported decreasing their use during the pandemic.

Health Canada invites perspectives on the draft guidance on personal production of cannabis for medical purposes.

Key questions for discussion are related to the factors that may be considered for refusal or revocation of a personal production registration on public health and public safety grounds.

The results of the Commonwealth Fund's International Health Policy survey have been released, comparing health data from 11 developed countries.

23% of Canadians surveyed reported using cannabis in the past year, compared with only 9% of their international peers. Some of this difference may be due to differences in cannabis legality across jurisdictions.

Pandemic lockdowns and restrictions have impacted the provision of treatment for people with gambling problems. Our traditional notions of that treatment needs to be offered in face-to-face contact have been challenged. Remote offerings seem effective, and to some clients, even preferable. In the gambling area, we are fortunate that there is an existing evidence-base for the efficacy of telephone and online interventions. This presentation will review the state of the field, and provide helpful guidance to clinicians.
