Stats Can releases data on cannabis and alcohol use during COVID-19 Forum topic

Statistics Canada has released the results of a survey on cannabis and alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among those who had previously consumed cannabis, more than one-third (34%) reported that their consumption had increased during the pandemic. Among those who reported increased consumption, 35% reported consuming cannabis on five or more days per week during the past month.

12% of those who used cannabis reported decreasing their use during the pandemic.

23% of Canadians used cannabis in 2020, says Commonwealth Fund survey Forum topic

The results of the Commonwealth Fund's International Health Policy survey have been released, comparing health data from 11 developed countries.

23% of Canadians surveyed reported using cannabis in the past year, compared with only 9% of their international peers. Some of this difference may be due to differences in cannabis legality across jurisdictions.

Brief Motivational Tele-health and Online Treatments: Helping Gamblers Change Events

Pandemic lockdowns and restrictions have impacted the provision of treatment for people with gambling problems. Our traditional notions of that treatment needs to be offered in face-to-face contact have been challenged. Remote offerings seem effective, and to some clients, even preferable. In the gambling area, we are fortunate that there is an existing evidence-base for the efficacy of telephone and online interventions. This presentation will review the state of the field, and provide helpful guidance to clinicians.

CCSA to fund 19 cannabis research projects Forum topic

It has been more than two years since Canada became the first G20 country to legalize recreational cannabis and cannabis products. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) is supporting research on non-therapeutic cannabis and the impacts of its legalization on public health and safety across the country. Through financial support from Health Canada, CCSA is funding 19 projects on subjects ranging from cannabis legalization and mental health to a comparison of legal versus illicit cannabis sales.
