With 1 out of 2 Canadian seniors experiencing emotional distress in the past year and 1.4 million elderly Canadians reporting loneliness, a risk factor for suicide and other health problems, it is clear that Canada’s senior population is experiencing mental health challenges that urgently need to be addressed. In spite of the critical demand for treatment and services, seniors are often under-treated for their mental health challenges for many reasons; among them: misdiagnoses, stigma, physical and financial challenges, and lacking service availability.

Webinar: The New Canadian Guidelines on Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonist Use Disorder Among Older Adults Events

The Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health (CCSMH) has been funded through the Substance Use and Addictions Program (SUAP) of Health Canada to create a set of four guidelines on the prevention, assessment, and management of substance use disorders among older adults for alcohol, benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZRAs), cannabis, and opioids. 

This presentation will provide useful guidance for clinicians on preventing the development of BZRA use disorder and optimally assessing and treating older individuals who have developed such a disorder.

Creative Expressions Seniors-FREE ART THERAPY GROUP Events

Unison Health and Community Services in partnership with  York West Active Living Centre will be running an Art Therapy Series for seniors!

This group is for community members 55 and over wishing to build relationships, learn mindfulness practices, and use art as a means of addressing concerns like anxiety, depression, and stress.  

 This nine week series will meet on Tuesdays from 10:0-12:00 am starting May 02 until June 28, 2019. It will be co-facilitated by Patricia Ki (art therapist) and Alessandra Pagilacolo (Mental Health Case Manager).
