The COVID-19 outbreak in the far north village of La Loche and Clearwater River Dene Nation, Saskatchewan was one of the first outbreaks in a remote community in Canada. With a population of just over 4000, the communities are approximately 95% Indigenous (First Nations and Métis). On April 15, 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the area and was then transmitted rapidly throughout the community.

I'm from the Alberta Rural Development Network, an Alberta-based group looking to conduct a second coordinated effort to map out homelessness in rural communities. We are looking for rural communities who have front-line services (food banks, shelters, libraries, etc.) and are interested in getting tangible data on what kind of housing/services their residents are looking for.

Making the Shift, Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, A Way Home Canada are excited to announce the release of the Youth Reconnect Program Model Guide—a community-based early intervention model which aims to reduce and prevent youth homelessness by helping young people stay connected to their family, community, school and strengthen their connections to natural supports.  

Providing harm reduction and overdose support has changed post COVID-19.  The Homelessness Services Association of B.C developed a guide outlining steps to take should you need to respond to an overdose incident while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

People experiencing homelessness often have compromised health, compounding health issues and are at an elevated risk from viruses like COVID-19. Shelters, drop-in centres, housing providers and other facilities and services that support people experiencing homelessness have increased risk of disease outbreaks.
