Research Viewpoint: Criminalization of drug use or possession is rooted in racism Forum topic

What you need to know

Drug prohibition (i.e., the banning of drugs) and criminalization (i.e., making using, selling or having drugs illegal) is costly and ineffective. It is time for these failed policies to end and to invest in the most heavily affected racialized communities.

Enough is ENOUGH- Opioid Overdoses Forum topic

My son Pete died on Dec 23 2021 to an accidental Opioid Overdose. It will be TWENTY YEARS this year that he died.  I shake my head in absolute despair about this escalating crisis/epidemic.

From Jan 2020 to the end of November 20202167 people have died

59% increase over the same period in 2019

Stigma is one of the biggest barriers people face when seeking and receiving care for substance use disorders. Direct service workers, including the law enforcement community, are often the first to respond to crisis situations with people experiencing substance-related harms, and they can play a major role in overcoming that stigma.

Stigma and discrimination, an area we must put more effort in Forum topic

CBC GoPublic broadcasted on 2021/01/17 a story about a bipolar man's experience in a Toronto hospital. I link it to here because I believe stigma and discrimination is a huge area that mental health community must put more effort in. Stigma is rooted in discrimination. Only our society truly eliminate discrimination against mental disability, the stigma will not effectively go away.

A call for participants for a study on combatting COVID-19 stigma, fear, and misinformation Forum topic

A Canadian research team is currently studying strategies and tools to combat stigma, fear, and misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study, which is being led by the Knowledge Translation (KT) Program at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at Unity Health in Toronto, is currently looking for members of the public, healthcare providers, and policymakers with diverse backgrounds to consider participating in a 30 – 60 minute telephone interview.
