The research challenge: How might we reduce suicide deaths among youth and young adults living with mental illness, especially psychosis or schizophrenia, in areas where health and social services are limited?

Why this research challenge is important:

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds.

Young adults living with psychosis or schizophrenia, especially those who live in northern and remote regions of Canada, are at much greater risk of suicide.

Teenagers Today: What you need to know

Many of us know someone living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This developmental disorder is often diagnosed in childhood, but symptoms can continue throughout adolescence and adulthood. The most commonly cited signs of ADHD are impulsivity, hyperactivity and/or inattention. Lesser-known superpowers among those with ADHD include seemingly endless energy and the ability to hyperfocus when interested in a project.

The majority of people who die by suicide deny having suicidal thoughts when asked by doctors in the weeks and months leading up to their death, a study has found.

This questions a widely held belief that suicide can be accurately predicted by psychiatrists and clinicians by assessing a patient's risk, especially in the short-term.
