CBT emphasizes cognitive restructuring and present-focused skills training, while attachment-based interventions delve into relational history and emotional healing. Often CBT is the only modality new clinicians are equipped with when they begin their practice. As clinicians gain experience, many recognize that applying CBT protocols in real-life therapeutic settings is challenging and seek alternative approaches. This gives rise to “eclectic” approaches which involve attachment-based interventions, such as emotion-focused therapy (EFT) or dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP).

People who are experiencing complex situations and/or intense problems are often the least likely to be able to commit to traditional forms of intervention due to the significant and competing needs that are often present in these circumstances. As a result, mental health practitioners working in these contexts must learn specific skills in order to maximize the time that they have with people.

Substantial research supports the importance of one’s personal narrative in overcoming challenging experiences, including life transitions and trauma. This training is designed to deepen participants understanding of how journaling can support the psychotherapeutic process. Multiple therapeutic modalities, including narrative therapy and trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) use the personal narrative as part of psychotherapy.

Session 1: Elder Abuse: Prevention, Detection, and Solutions

In this training participants will learn about normative sexual behaviour using a developmental perspective and increase their understanding and awareness of inappropriate sexual behaviour presentations. Learn when to report or refer for further assessment and clinical intervention.

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) is a systems-based, trauma-informed crisis prevention and intervention model that assists organizations in preventing crises from occurring, de-escalating potential crises, managing acute crisis phases, reducing potential and actual injury to children/youth and staff and learning constructive ways to handle stressful situations.
