An interactive presentation addressing questions and concerns of parents/ caregivers and service providers regarding the use of technology by youth (grades 7 and up). Presented by school based addiction counsellors from Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services, Ottawa, Ontario.
Making the Shift Inc. is thrilled to host the first of its Virtual Event Series featuring Jesse Thistle, a Métis scholar with lived experience of youth homelessness and the co-author of the definition of Indigenous homelessness in Canada. Jesse will share his journey of resilience while navigating homelessness as an Indigenous youth, how it informed his work as a scholar and national bestselling author, and his process of co-developing the definition of Indigenous homelessness in Canada.
This series will provide evidence on cannabis use amongst youth, present a panel conversation on how to meet the needs of diverse youth and provide concrete skills that practitioners can use when working with youth.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The global enforcement of social distancing measures that began earlier this year has eliminated many common sources of entertainment. How then have individuals been keeping themselves engaged during this time? This article outlines the increased participation in online gaming and gambling, how these opportunities have changed as a result of COVID-19 and how these activities have specifically impacted youth. The article also explores strategies to stay safe during this time.

In collaboration by School Mental Health Ontario and the Ministry of Education, we developed vaping fact sheets for primary and secondary educators and youth. The resources contain facts on vaping, such as the laws around vaping, health risks for youth, and corrections of misconceptions. They also include where to find support and additional information on vaping.
They are available in both English and French.

Prior to the pandemic, the newly opened Kenora Youth Wellness Hub had put in place a robust suite of in-person services which included primary care, sexual health, mental health, substance use, educational and employment supports, cultural and recreational programming, and service navigation support. Social distancing requirements and group size limitations meant that the hub had to close its’ doors and find creative ways to support the youth in this critical time.
