Many providers working in the helping profession, engage in this type of work because they are compassionate and empathetic. However, high caseloads and repeated exposure to traumatic stories can affect their mental health over time, leading to burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. But alongside concepts of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, it's important to recognize the strength and growth that providers derive from engaging in this type of work, and to also think about concepts of vicarious resilience and compassion satisfaction.
