FREE Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Course for Youth Events

We are starting a new 8-week virtual Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Course for Youth, with the First Class on Monday, March 8th @ 6:30PM.

Since starting this program in a virtual format in September 2020, the feedback from participants has been very positive, the youth who have completed the program reported improvement in their overall wellbeing, improvement in their mental health, a better handle on the stressors in their lives, and a greater overall ability to cope with difficult situations.

This talk reviews the features and diagnosis of depression and summarizes common treatments including medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle strategies.

Dr. Vanessa Aversa is a third-year psychiatry resident at the University of Toronto, based at Sunnybrook Hospital. She has enjoyed working in collaboration with Hope + Me - Mood Disorders Association of Ontario over the past year.

Research snapshot: Psychological adjustment and stress among adolescents during the initial COVID-19 crisis Forum topic

In the early stages of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario government put a number of measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus, which included closing schools and encouraging physical distancing. The impact of these measures on the mental health of those in adolescence, a critical developmental stage, was worrisome yet unknown.

For this reason, researchers at Western University set out to explore teens’ stress related to COVID-19 and its relationship to their daily behaviours and other indicators of psychological distress.

We are welcoming all youth (ages 14 to 27) to take advantage of this FREE 8-week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program.

This is a Canadian Red Cross-sponsored initiative to help youth learn one of the best techniques to reduce stress and anxiety and gain the resilience to deal with any of the stressors of life.

The 8-week program will involve 1.5 hours of weekly lecture and meditation practice in a virtual setting.
