Course Overview

The Division of Mental Health and Addiction invites you to the event "Preparing for the holidays: What's new, what's true, how to create non-alcoholic brew: Canada's Guidance on Alcohol and Health."

The objective of the session is to help prepare family physicians to have meaningful conversations with patients about the new guidelines on alcohol and health.

A new Canadian clinical guideline for the treatment of high-risk drinking and alcohol use disorder will be published in mid-October. The guideline co-chairs, Drs. Evan Wood and Jürgen Rehm, will present an overview of the guideline’s recommendations and practical tips for implementing them. The webinar will cover strategies for screening and diagnosis, as well as the range of treatment options, along with the evidence behind each of these strategies.

Spotlight on Cannabis, Alcohol and Vaping: Get the facts and practical tools for talking to youth

The webinar provides facts and information about the present landscape of cannabis, alcohol vaping and youth and how it is affecting families, as well as practical tools to engage in meaningful conversations with families about youth substance use prevention.

Outline:

Alcohol-linked causes lead to approximately 17,000 Canadian deaths annually. However, alcohol products sold in Canada are not required to be labelled with their health risks. In this commentary, the authors offer rationales for why it is important to mandate labelling of all alcohol products, summarize Canadian initiatives to legislate alcohol warning labels and address myths and misconceptions about alcohol labels.

The Ontario Public Health Association’s Alcohol Workgroup is pleased to host this webinar that will provide an overview of the recent Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation (CAPE) project as it pertains to Ontario, as well as provide updates regarding OPHA’s recent actions to influence alcohol policy and upcoming opportunities to get involved.
